Let’s Keep those Resolutions and Shine in 2021
By LISA SCHAEFER
Are you ready to make 2021 a year that SHINES? As a small business owner, speaker, and coach this is the time of year to start getting intentional for the new year. We begin strategic planning and focusing on areas of our lives we want to continue to improve. People often ask me, “What’s the best way to set and achieve goals?“
The first step is to GET CLARITY. Oftentimes people talk about all of the things they don’t want but have a more challenging time thinking about what they do want. An exercise I use with my clients is the 7 Levels Deep Exercise to help them be clear on what they want and the steps they will take to get there.
Step #1 – What is it that you REALLY want?
Just shut off the inner critic who is going to try to tell you why you can’t have it or wants to sabotage you before you even get started. What is your definition of success and what do you really want to have happen in the next year. FANTASIZE about what you really want. Don’t let the “How am I going to do this?” stop you. Focus on Gaining Clarity.
Look at the areas of your life and determine what you REALLY want:
Step #2: WRITE IT DOWN and make it specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.
Step #3: Ask WHY do I want it?
And really do a deep dive into your why’s. Ask yourself Why four more times. This will start to help you solidify the reasons and impact this change is going to have on your life.
For example, people might say things like, I want to make more money. Why? Because I want to be able to have financial freedom. Why? Because I have had to worry about money in the past and I don’t want to have to worry about it again. Why? Because when I was growing up, I saw how my parents were always worried and it caused problems in their relationship. Why? Because I never want money to get in the way of my relationships. When you ask why and go deeper into your motives, it helps you get the internal motivation to achieve these goals. You will do whatever it takes to meet that goal.
Step #4: BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN ACHIEVE.
Our inner critic likes to rear her head and automatically tell us the reasons why we cannot have what we want. These are called limiting belief systems. You may have subconscious rules that are getting in the way like: “It’s hard to make money, money doesn’t grow on trees, the rich always get richer”.
What is one thing you can do today to help you get to where you are going? When you focus on Consistent Daily Action it helps you find the small success that gives you the motivation to continue.
For example, if you want to make more money in sales, increase the number of daily sales calls you make. Talk to at least 3 more people per day to generate interest. When you can look at the big picture, but then focus on one thing you can do consistently each day, you will get momentum to keep moving.
Step #5: Create an Action Plan
Every day ask yourself, “What did I do well today? What am I most proud of today? What worked? What did not work and what will I do differently tomorrow?” Focus on actions that are getting you closer to your goal. Prioritize your daily activities.
Step #6: Find an accountability partner, mentor, or coach.
Having that person that you can reach out to can help you stay persistent in achieving your goals. Plus you can set rewards for yourself as you achieve quarterly, monthly or daily goals.
2021 is the year to make your resolutions stick. Follow these steps and you will continue to find success in your lives.
