Asking for what you want is about more than simply making a request. Asking for what you want is putting together a set of well thought out plans, good timing, confidence, and resolve about what you want into one package. Ask for what you want with confidence by being:

  • Clear on what you want
  • Mindful of the situation around you
  • Confident in your nonverbal communication
  • Prepared to rationalize your ask

Asking for what you want will be easier and your chances of getting what you want will be higher if you are prepared. Let’s dig a little deeper.

Be clear on what you want

Knowing what you want and why you want it, makes asking for it confidently much easier. Some asks may not need an explanation but others might. Be assured in the reason you want what you are asking for so you can boldly make the ask despite any possible refusal. Be mindful of the situation around you.As they say, “timing is everything“. When asking for something, what’s going on around you can greatly influence the results. To ensure the timing, location, and circumstances are right, consider the surroundings and activity in the area.

Be confident in your nonverbal communication

So much of our communication is nonverbal. Your words may say one thing while your body and eyes may show a very different story. If you want your request to be received with confidence, your body language must align with your ask. Stand up straight, look people in the eye, and ooze confidence from the inside out.

Be prepared to rationalize your ask

Asking for what you want can be risky. You have to be ready to stand up for what you’re asking for. You may need to turn around a full-on rejection or defend your ask. Be prepared to educate or persuade if necessary by providing reasons, facts, or other details to support your request.

Confidently asking for what you want is more than making an ask

You’ve got to be committed to what you are asking for. To get the ask, you must ask for it at the right time, using nonverbal communication, and be prepared to defend your request.

Bundling these tips up with your ask will increase your confidence and make your request easier and more successful.

“The great secret of getting what you want from life is to know what you want and believe you can have it.”

Norman Vincent Peale
